PATEK PHILIPPE

Painting with Wool

Every Portalegre tapestry has a history as rich as its colors. Commissioned by Patek Philippe Magazine, this story took me to Portalegre, located in Alentejo (Portugal), to document the centuries-old art of hand-weaving tapestries – a slow, painstaking craft where thousands of wool threads are worked by hand into images of extraordinary depth and detail.

At the heart of the project was Manufatura, where weavers carry this tradition forward with patience, precision and care. I photographed everything from vast tapestries alive with color and texture, to the quiet rhythm of artisans at work – threading by hand, matching hues by eye, building each image stitch by stitch until it reads like a painting.
